ORIGINS OF THE NAME

Named after the biblical Mamre (Gen 13:18), said to mean 'fattiness'

HISTORY

In 1701 the Dutch East India Company established an outpost here and named it Groene Kloof. It was abondoned in 1791. By 1808 Moravian missionaries established a mission station here.
