ORIGINS OF THE NAME

It is believed that the name refers to the "Melkhout" plant (Sideroxylon inermi) that grows in the area.

HISTORY

Originated as a holiday destination for local farmers.

It was still known as Losperds Bay on January 6, 1806 when British troops under command of Admiral Sir Home Popham and General Sir David Baird landed here. After landing, the troops marched on Cape Town but encountered Dutch resistance at Blaauwberg. The "Battle of Blaauwberg" marked the start of the second British occupation of the Cape.
