ORIGINS OF THE NAME
Refers to the peace (
Vrede) that reigned after the Church was established and also after sufficient water
was pumped to the town.
HISTORY
Development in this region was greatly hampered by the lack of fresh water and the available water was the cause
of many disputes. The Dutch Reformed Church established a congregation here in 1875 on the farm Twisfontein. By
1883 a town was laid out that bore the name
Procesfontein (Lawsuit fountain) and became the Vredenburg
Municipality in 1932. Water was pumped to the town after WWII after which the region developed to what it is today.
